Erectile Dysfunction (ED): The Facts
ED can affect men of all ages, although the problem becomes more common the older you get. Defined as the inability to get or maintain an erection hard enough for sex, ED can have numerous underlying causes, both physical and mental.
There are a lot of factors that can impact on our sexual function Many cite an emotional trigger as the cause of ED. In other cases, it can be brought on by an underlying health condition, fitness levels, excessive alcohol consumption – sometimes some medication can play a role too. |
Unconscious triggers have a big role to play We can’t always predict or control our emotions, nor can we fully comprehend how they might affect our bodies. All of us experience stress or anxiety at some point, whether from career or family triggers, tiredness, money, even a new relationship…that’s just how life is! |
It’s a medical issue that’s very common amongst men 02 Erectile Dysfunction is extremely common and nothing to be embarrassed about. Suffering in silence is particularly prevalent amongst men and many would prefer to avoid speaking about ED at all, rather than address it. |
More common than you might think
Most men will experience erectile dysfunction at some point in their life and the chances of experiencing it increase with age, accounting for up to 4.3 million men in the UK. 03
Myth One: Having erectile dysfunction makes me less of a man Incorrect, ED has nothing to do with masculinity or manliness, although many people wrongly believe that they are linked. The condition is caused by factors that for the most part, lie outside of a person’s direct control, although steps can be taken to improve general overall health or state of mind. |
Myth Two: I don’t have to worry about ED, that’s something for older men The belief that ED can only affect older men, over the age of 60, is also false. Men of all ages can experience ED. 04 |
Myth Three: Mind over matter – you can think your way out of ED It’s all in your head? Not always! Although ED can be caused by psychological issues like stress, it can also be a side-effect of certain medications 05, so it’s worth checking with your GP or pharmacist if the medication you’re on might impact sexual function. |
It’s not your fault. And it can be treated.
It’s human to doubt ourselves and the vicious cycle that can come about through performance anxieties in the bedroom is hard to break. Sadly, fear of failure in the bedroom can be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Erectile Dysfunction and Relationships
For most couples, sex can be a tricky topic when it comes to having a discussion, so don’t worry, you’re not alone in feeling shy or uncomfortable. Remember, it’s likely your partner is feeling the same way and will be relieved to speak about it.
If you feel like you want to speak to your partner about erectile dysfunction, why not try…
